“We are not considering a resignation,” said Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev in an interview for “NOVA” TV. He said the protests happening in the square are a normal part of democracy.

Mr. Donchev regrets not being able to take his students to the demonstrations and said he remains open for every argument of the people. In such situations, the police should be listening more and acting less, he said.

“I am not expecting us to lose any MP to the protests. The demonstrations in favor of the acting government is an interesting development of the events, but there is a good reason for it – the admission of Bulgaria to the Eurozone.”

To the question of journalists whether the office is facing a similar situation to the ruling of former Prime Minister Oresharski, he said the genesis of the current government is fundamentally different.

“Oresharki’s cabinet was put together from the debris of the shattered Parliament. Back then, we were the leading political power. Their government was created out of spite. Now, people demand more freedom, democracy, and justice,” said Donchev, adding it is always a just and legitimate cause.

The Deputy Primi Minister said he is puzzled why the detention of a deputy-minister is considered normal, but when it comes down to a President’s aide, it is becoming an issue. He added serious corruption issues in the country have been flagged for years, but when specific actions are taken, the public is objecting.

“It hurts me to witness Bulgarian citizens standing up against each other, especially when one side is wearing uniforms. An investigation is underway to determine whether the police has used excessive force. However, if a police officer is attacked, he has the right to defend himself”, added Donchev.

He said the government still has certain promises to fulfill by the end of the office.

The ongoing waves of protests in Bulgaria began last Thursday demanding the resignation of the third cabinet formed by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.
