In response to a question from Burgas municipal councilor Ivan Ivanov, Deputy Mayor for Education and Policy at Burgas Municipality Mihail Nenov presented an official report on the administration’s actions regarding the purchase of 30 radon detectors. According to the document, actions on the matter began in April 2024, and the contract with the supplier, Bioevibul EOOD, was signed on April 22, 2025, for a total of BGN 15,600 including VAT.

According to the response, the municipality acted in coordination with the Regional Health Inspectorate in Burgas and the National Center for Radiobiology, and ventilation systems have already been installed in kindergartens with high radon levels. The Airthings Corentium devices have already been delivered, and a schedule for mass screening in public buildings is to be drawn up.

Despite the comprehensive report, municipal councilor Ivan Ivanov raised several questions related to communication on the subject:

“We are pleased that the issue is moving forward, but several questions remain,” Ivanov said.

He pointed out that despite months of communication about the devices, the Municipal Council had not been informed about this during the meetings of the committees that consider such proposals.

Particularly acute is the question of why, in March, the administration stated that it “would not be blackmailed” for radon detectors, only to engage in official correspondence with a supplier company just days later. The situation with the April session remains even more unclear, when it was claimed that the devices had already been purchased, even though the advance payment was not made until May 16.

“We believe that when it comes to public health and trust, good communication and transparency are key,” Ivanov emphasized.

The saga of radon levels in public buildings, especially in kindergartens, is being closely monitored by both municipal councillors and civil society. Additional information is expected from the administration, including how the independence and reliability of the upcoming measurements will be guaranteed.

Here are all the questions Ivanov asks:

  • Why, given that there has been months of communication about the purchase of radon measurement devices, did no one from the administration inform us about this during the committee discussions on our proposal?
  • Why, during the session of the Burgas Municipal Council in March, did the administration state that it “would not be blackmailed” for radon measuring devices, and a few days later begin official communication with a specific company?
  • Why were we told at the Burgas Municipal Council meeting in April that the devices had already been purchased, when the first payment was not made until May 16?
