Bozhidar Bojanov, MP from Democratic Bulgaria, was adamant in a post on Facebook that the protests in 2020 were not about the eurozone. On the contrary. Democratic Bulgaria strongly supports our country’s membership in the currency union. Bojanov reminded GERB what Bulgarian citizens protested for five years ago:

“Since GERB’s position yesterday refers to 2020, and that the protests began on the day of the acceptance into the eurozone waiting room, a few facts:

1) the protests did not start then and did not start in Sofia, but before that in Rosenets, when Borissov’s government served the DPS at Peevski’s behest and this blew up the society.

2) the protests in Sofia were not related to the eurozone, but to dissatisfaction with the government. The specific reason was the actions of the prosecutor’s office, following the president’s positions, triggered precisely by what is described in point 1, showing the scale of the state conquered by Peevski.

3) The protest that the President went to was on 09.07.2020. Bulgaria was accepted into ERM II on 10.07.2020. I.e. the protest is not on the day of the admission and has nothing to do with it.

Joining the euro area is a priority for Democratic Bulgaria and for our partners in We Continue to Change. Our parliamentary group with every action is trying to move Bulgaria closer to the euro area, including when the government shows hesitation.”
