A doctor from the Heart and Brain Hospital in Burgas has been in critical condition since April 8. An incident with her partner and colleague occurred just days before, which is of extreme concern.

According to initial information, employees of the Heart and Brain Hospital gathered on 4 April at the Bulgaria Hotel in Burgas to celebrate World Health Day and Health Worker’s Day. It was attended by Dr. Tanya Kostadinova and Dr. Halit Choban, who were living on family terms. The press centre of the Police Department of Burgas said that after drinking a large amount of alcohol, the doctor made a remark to her partner. In order not to quarrel in front of their colleagues, the two went to the first floor, where a big scandal ensued. Video camera footage confirmed this. It was also seen how he pushed her and she fell, hitting her head. However, the woman got up and they subsequently left together.

Four days later, on 8 April, Dr Kostadinova complained of a severe headache. She had a scan done at the Heart and Brain Hospital, where it was seen that she had two haematomas, the Burgas police said. Emergency brain surgery followed and since then Dr Kostadinova has been in the hospital’s intensive care unit in an extremely serious condition. According to unconfirmed information, she has fallen into brain death.

Subsequently, the Burgas Police Department filed charges against Dr. Halit Choban and he was ordered not to leave the country.

A journalist of Iskra.bg contacted Dr. Halit Choban. At this stage he refused to comment on the case, but twice stressed:

“I am not guilty! That’s all I want to say!”

The media outlet explained to him that we had spoken to the press centre of the Burgas Police Department and that we were familiar with the initial information on the case. He stated that he did not see Dr Kostadinova hit her head on the night in question. After a few clarifying questions, Dr Choban went on to say that the scans performed on Dr Kostadinova had shown that she had a haemorrhagic stroke, a condition that cannot be brought about by trauma. He said that one case coincided with the other and that the doctor’s severe condition was solely due to the hemorrhagic stroke.

Dr Choban denied being banned from leaving the country:

“I don’t know, I’m here, I’m in Bulgaria, I’m at home. I will not leave the country.”
