Medicines to treat acute viral infections and antibiotics for children aged 0 to 7 years will be completely free. This was announced by Kostadin Angelov during a briefing, stressing that the funds for this measure will be provided from the budget of the National Health Insurance Fund.
According to the estimates of the funds to be spent in 2024, the provision of free medicines for children in this age group will cost just over 20 million leva. The government assures that the necessary funds are provided for in the budget and will not lead to financial shocks in the health system.
The proposal met with broad support among political forces. The BSP-United Left said they were extremely satisfied with this step. According to them, despite the economic challenges, the government’s social commitment remains a priority. Stanislav Balabanov from “There is such a People” stressed that this proposal is consensual and was included in the programmes of the ruling formations. He expressed hope that the entire parliament would support the measure, as children’s health is a priceless priority.
Despite the political support, MPs stressed that the adoption of the state budget was a key moment for the implementation of this initiative. Angelov also assured that the budget includes funds for the construction of a children’s hospital, which is another important step in improving pediatric care in the country.
The proposal for free medicines for children is expected to be formally submitted to parliament for consideration and receive the approval of MPs.
