Today marks the European Day of Organ Donation and Transplantation. 1145 people are waiting for a transplant in Bulgaria. This year 4 donor situations were realized in our country after brain death. The noble decision of 4 families and the professionalism of the doctors gave a second chance for life to Bulgarians in need of transplantation – 5 organ transplants were performed.

The Ministry of Health has released a video that draws attention to the topic of donation and transplantation. It also shows why we must be in solidarity.

„Every year in Europe, 40,000 people get a second chance at life after a transplant. I am one of them. Another 48,000 are on the waiting list for transplants – that’s 6 people per hour. On day 18, people lose the battle for their lives while waiting for a suitable donor. It is important to be in solidarity”, said Dimitar, who was transplanted.

We remind you that Bulgaria adopted a National Program, and an information campaign was conducted. But with 2020 came the pandemic, and COVID-19 posed a serious challenge to transplant recipients and their families. Our doctors were put in an unfamiliar situation. Organ transplantation in the country was stopped for 2 months.

Through a video address and the Minister of Health Prof. Kostadin Angelov addressed a „challenge“ – “To support donation and transplantation with 20 words in 20 seconds!
