„As a minister, I believe that I have the authority to demand the resignation of Ivan Geshev. We are waiting for a decision of the Constitutional Court on the question of whether the Minister has the authority to request this resignation. I will then request his resignation.

This was commented by the Minister of Justice Ivan Demerdzhiev, who today answered questions in the column The government speaks! Open.  He motivated his request with various pre-trial proceedings, which lead to damage to Bulgarian citizens and to suspicions that the Prosecutor General is acting against the rule of law.

We have been in conflict with him for a long time, but not in a personal conflict. The way he was appointed, the messages he broadcast, provoked a reaction from the Plovdiv Bar Association, of which I was chairman. His answer was personal concern. We have been in conflict ever since, he added.

In case hundreds of people protest, call your name and demand your resignation, you should consider whether to take this step, added the Minister of Justice. He said he wanted a well-functioning prosecutor’s office. According to him, the conflict is not between Geshev, who really wants to work, and the people who do not want him to work.

I would bet on transparency and public control over the work of the judiciary. I would bet on the introduction of e-justice and increasing access to justice. I would point out these three aspects as the most important, Demerdzhiev is categorical.

Asked about the Specialized Justice, the line minister replied that he wanted it to leave a sense of justice and not a bat to certain individuals.

„When we talk about this institution, we ask ourselves, why is there interest only in some individuals and not in others?“
