“15,624,000 people in Bulgaria receive salaries over BGN 9,000.”

Thus, the Minister of Finance Kiril Ananiev answered a question from the BSP MP Zhelyo Boychev.

Of these, revenues from income tax are BGN 34,652 million. The answer also says that for a year the number of those with high salaries has increased by 324, or 2%. Another 18,707 people can boast that in July they received a salary of between BGN 6,000 and 9,000. Exactly a year ago, there were 16,179 people with such salaries, i.e. their number increased by over 15%. Among the people with such high salaries are the heads of banks, telecoms, other international companies, as well as heads of some state institutions.

The economic crisis has led to a reduction in the number of contract workers. But at the same time, the salaries of working Bulgarians continue to rise.

In July, 2,312,684 people in the country worked on an employment contract, according to data from the finance ministry. A year earlier, they were 146,095 more.

More than half of them – 1,344,329, have a monthly income of BGN 560 to 2,000. The most numerous is the group of those with a salary of 560 to 2100 BGN – they are 730 025 people. The people with a salary between 1000 and 2000 BGN are 614 304. Those with between 2000 and 3000 BGN are 151 609, and 90 471 people have received between 3000 and 6000 BGN salary. Between 6 and 9 thousand leva were received by 18,707 people.

According to the tax returns filed in 2019, over 1.5 million Bulgarians have declared an annual income of up to BGN 6,720. Over BGN 108,000 per year, which makes over BGN 9,000 per month, have been declared by 20,237 people. Their number is higher than those with the same salary, because the annual tax returns include other incomes such as rents, annuities, etc.

But only the number of people who receive less than BGN 560 per month decreases and in July they were around BGN 692,000. For a month they received less than the minimum wage. These are people who, for example, are temporarily employed, started working or were fired in July and therefore did not receive a full salary. At the same time, the number of people receiving more than BGN 560 is increasing.

The amount received by individuals from dividends and liquidation shares in various companies is significant. According to the data provided for 2019, they are BGN 5.994 billion. However, the report does not indicate how many people actually took this money.
