Dragomir Zakov is officially the new Minister of Defense in the government of the four-party coalition with Prime Minister Kiril Petkov. His nomination was discussed at an extraordinary session of the National Assembly earlier today.
181 MPs voted for the replacement of Stefan Yanev with Dragomir Zakov. 33 members of the MRF pressed the „abstain“ buttons.
Immediately after the vote, Zakov took the oath of office in the National Assembly, officially taking office as Minister of Defense.
His nomination was announced a few hours ago, surprisingly, by Prime Minister Kiril Petkov to journalists. Yesterday, the Prime Minister again announced the name of Prof. Todor Tagarev as the successor of Stefan Yanev. It is still unclear what necessitated this last-minute change.
Petkov said he was very happy to announce that Zakov had confirmed late last night that he accepted the invitation. According to the Prime Minister, within the framework of international security, there was no one more prepared than him. He is Bulgaria’s ambassador to NATO and knew the whole system.
Zakov’s nomination was agreed with the President and the partners in the ruling four-party coalition.
