Bulgaria – fifth fastest disappearing nation worldwide

Bulgaria ranked fifth fastest disappearing nation out of 235 countries and independent regions included in the ranking provided by the UN and Worldometers. The Bulgarian population contracted by 0,74% on a yearly basis followed by Latvia with 1,08%, Litva – 1,35%, Wallis and Futuna – 1,69%, and Puerto Rico – 2,47%. 

According to Wordlomers’ algorithm, the Bulgarian population stands at 6,953,227 with its peak being during 1985 at 8,975,361. The population kept on decreasing by an average of 0,16% until the dawn of the Bulgarian democracy, followed by a 0,74% decline until the end of the 20th century. For the period of 2000-2010, it kept decreasing by 0,67%, and between 2010-2020 by 0,67%. The demographic crisis unfolds despite the efforts of the Bulgarian government to encourage parenting and to provide a more stable economic environment.

The average age of Bulgarians is 44,6 years, with 75,6%of the population or 5,253,037 people living in urban areas. 

According to Wordlomers’ forecasts, the Bulgarian population is expected to decline by further 262,000 people over the next five years, falling just under 6 million by 2038. In contrast, the global population is expected to grow to over 8 billion people by 2025 and to over 9 billion by 2040. 

The population on the Old Continent has increased by 0,06% over the last year reaching 747,6 million people. Positive growth is most prominent in Western and Scandinavian countries. Luxembourg has accounted for a record growth of 1,66% getting ranked 66th worldwide. The fastest-growing nation in the world is Niger after increasing by 3,84% to a total of 24,2 million people. 

In terms of religious affiliation, the majority of orthodox Christians are concentrated in Slavic countries. The biggest portion of catholic worshippers is concentrated in South America, Western Europe and Africa. Muslims are predominant in Westeast Asia, North America and parts of Southeast Asia. North America and Scandinavian countries account for most Protestants. The most densely populated region in the world – East Asia, accounts mainly for Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, and other local beliefs.
