About 40,000 out of 730 000 Bulgarian students who didn’t attend online classes will go to summer school, announced Bulgarian Minister of Education and Science Krasimir Vulchev in a TV interview for the national television “BTV”.

Classes will most likely be held in open spaces. Between 1% and 2% of all students didn’t attend any online classes during the school year whereas between 10% and 11% were engaged only through social networks and not through the educational online platform of the Ministry of Education and Science. These students will have to attend additional classes in the summer and risk repeating the school year if unable to catch up with the rest of the students.

Vulchev said that the school year 2020-2021 is likely to begin on 15 September and the Ministry is ready to reschedule it if necessary. He added that the closure of eight schools in the country has been canceled for now, but the closure of the schools in Polikrayshte and Mihnevo is still being considered.

He also insisted that the preparation for the maturity exams in Bulgarian language and literature goes according to plan despite the ongoing emergency situation. The Ministry has sufficient staff and video surveillance equipment in place to monitor the exams.

Vulchev believes that schools remain the safest place for the exams to take place as they have been closed for over two and a half months and have been disinfected on a regular basis.

He said that about 90% of all schools successfully covered all study material despite the closures and the school flu breaks throughout the year. Teachers have managed to make up for the time lost thanks to the lack of school excursions and green schools.
