The government will introduce new stricter measures due to the spread of COVID-19 in our country. This was announced at an extraordinary briefing by the Minister of Health Kiril Ananiev. Earlier today, Prime Minister Boiko Borisov convened a meeting with the National Operational Headquarters to discuss the increase in the number of coronavirus cases in Bulgaria.

Wearing masks in closed public places will again be mandatory, it became clear from Ananiev’s words. This includes shops, malls, pharmacies and nightclubs. A distance of 1.5 meters will also have to be observed. Indoor events will be organized when 50% of the capacity of the respective hall is filled, and wearing masks will also be mandatory.

„We do all this only in order to preserve the health and lives of Bulgarian citizens. We will decide by the end of the week whether to prolong the emergency epidemic situation in the country, „Ananiev announced.

The Chief State Health Inspector Dr. Angel Kunchev stressed that there is a real increase in cases, and fortunately it is not so great for people in need of intensive care.

For his part, Ananiev was adamant that the control over the observance of the anti-epidemic measures will be strengthened, including the new ones, which are introduced by an order of the Minister of Health.

As for outdoor events such as football matches, there will be 1000 spectators per sector, but with the obligatory observance of the respective physical distance.

„Is this a second wave or just an increase in cases?“ I am more inclined to believe in the latter on the basis of people who have accepted that it is all over. The measures are not observed and a more serious morbidity is observed“, Dr. Kunchev was categorical.

He also stressed that control will be strengthened because the results of the last week show that the conscience of the people cannot be relied on.

Mayor of Sofia Yordanka Fandakova was also present at the briefing, saying it was obvious that last week’s figures were alarming. She said she had considered making it mandatory to wear masks in the capital with her order if no such action was taken by the government. Fandakova called on Sofia residents to return to the attitude towards the risk of COVID-19 disease that they had during the state of emergency.
