The international non-governmental organization „Reporters Without Borders“ has called for urgent action to „save media freedom“ in Bulgaria. They point out that the independent media in the country are „on the verge of extinction„.
The organization has made 10 recommendations, prepared with the help of Bulgarian media experts. We need to deal with the lack of freedom of speech and strengthen the independence of media operators, as well as that of BNA.
According to “Reporters Without Borders”, the upcoming elections provide an opportunity to act in this direction. They call for better conditions for the security of journalists and to protect them from „legal and economic harassment.”
Our country ranks 111st out of 180 in the “Reporters Without Borders” media freedom index last year. The result is the lowest among the countries of the European Union.
