„The flow of illegal migrants to Bulgaria will not decrease and it is even possible that they will continue to increase. Europe must be ready for this.“
This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister for Public Order and Security and Minister of Internal Affairs Ivan Demerdzhiev, who took part in a panel „Migration and Border Security: New Challenges for Europe“ in Bucharest.
He cited statistics according to which over 168,000 attempts to enter Bulgaria by illegal migrants were registered last year. This trend has become even more worrying in the current year, with attempts increasing by 30 per 100.
The Minister of the Interior thanked the European Commission for its support in the fight against migrant pressure, expressing the hope that they will strengthen. He also expressed gratitude to Turkey, which also provides assistance to our country.
The Minister of the Interior reminded that Bulgaria has made a commitment to limit this phenomenon and respects the commitment to limit secondary movements.
