Diana Kovacheva was unanimously elected ombudsman of Bulgaria, announced the Bulgarian national television “BNT”.

In favor of her election voted 173 MPs, 3 abstained and none were against. Kovacheva was the only candidate for the position of national legal representative. She temporarily held the position in September 2019 when former ombudsman Maya Manolova resigned in order to run for the local elections.

The opposition party of “BSP” supported her election despite being proposed by the political party of “GERB”. The ruling party commented that she posses all professional qualities needed to step in the shoes of the ombudsman. “BSP” also praised her efforts so far to remain independent and the professionalism she has demonstrated in her line of work. The opposition hopes that she will continue to tackle the monopoly issues in the country.

Kovacheva used to occasion to express her gratitude towards the MPs for their trust. She admitted that there a lot of challenges lying ahead but she is willing to invest all needed efforts. She said she will be working towards turning the ombudsman from last resort institution into the first point of legal assistance for the public.
