Bulgaria will create our entire battalion group due to the tension between Russia and Ukraine. This became clear after the government meeting at which the issue was discussed. Ministers debated Bulgaria’s response strategy to the NATO-Russia-Ukraine confrontation.
The Prime Minister Kiril Petkov announced that it was decided, along with the efforts in the field of diplomacy, to take actions to improve the country’s defense potential. This means preparing a battalion group that will be entirely under our command, explained the Minister of Defense Stefan Yanev.
Petkov, for his part, was adamant that Bulgaria will work towards the de-escalation of the tension. And our strategy will be built on the potential of the Bulgarian army and it will be the leader in this case.
The Prime Minister also said that over the years our army has remained underfunded. This, in turn, has created deficits that are very clear in a situation like the current one. Petkov announced that in the future work would be done to clear up these problems and not just to buy equipment. He was adamant that Bulgaria should not be a consumer of security, but a constructive partner in NATO.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodora Genchovska commented that the efforts of diplomacy should be backed up with confidence that the country has the necessary defense capabilities on its own. This would prove that we are a constructive partner of NATO.
