Bulgaria closes its borders to third-country nationals

The entry of third-country nationals into Bulgaria is temporarily prohibited. This was announced by Health Minister Kiril Ananiev who issued also an order about that.

The measure enters into force from 00:00 on March 20 and will continue until April 17, 2020. Third-country nationals are not allowed to enter at any of the border points of Bulgaria and with none of the transport options, including sea, air, road and rail.

Persons arriving from Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, France, Northern Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland are prohibited from entering the country.

The exceptions are made only for Bulgarian citizens, family members of Bulgarian citizens and persons with permanent and long-term residence status on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria.

The prohibition does not apply solely to:

  • health care professionals, elderly carers and researchers;
  • diplomats, military personnel, officials of international organizations and humanitarian workers who carry out their professional duties;
  • persons who travel for humanitarian reasons and third-country nationals who are authorized to stay in an EU Member State for a long time and travel through Bulgaria in order to return to their country of residence and living.
