A modern rail link will connect Burgas railway station and the airport. The ambition is to reach Sunny Beach. This became clear at a briefing in the municipality with the participation of the mayor Dimitar Nikolov and the general director of the National Railway Company Eng. Maria Genova.

“I hope that the last phase in terms of obtaining funding under the operational program will be a fact and we will create a route that will ease traffic and reduce accidents. It will be a completely environmentally friendly transport”, Nikolov explained. She added:

“The southern Black Sea coast will get a new check-in option at Burgas Airport – from the railway station itself and this will reduce the congestion at Burgas Airport during the summer months. We hope that this project will develop and be from Sunny Beach to the centre of Burgas.”

“All our efforts are focused on completing this initial phase of the project. Preparing a technical project so that we can make a procedure and choose a contractor. And to look for opportunities to implement the development of the connection to Sunny Beach”, said Eng. Maria Genova.

The rail link falls under this project from the corridor to the airport. It includes technical design, master plan, land expropriation, environmental impact, cost-benefit analysis. There are already four contracts signed for these six tasks.

The line is within the city limits and almost entirely follows the pulse of the existing rail line. The diversion to the airport will be made from the area just before Sarafovo and the Burgas airport station will be designed on a flyover. Two new stops will be built. There is also an idea for a third stop to satisfy the future development of the city and the railway stations. Pedestrian overpasses as well as underpasses will be built along the entire route.

The design for the rail link to the airport is expected to be finalised by the end of this year, with construction starting in 2025. The rail link is projected to be completed in about three years.
