The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Tsoncho Ganev sent an inquiry to the Minister of Environment and Water regarding an ecological catastrophe on the territory of Sredets Municipality, Burgas District.

In the inquiry, Tsoncho Ganev points out that there are many unregulated landfills on the territory of Sredets. Due to them, the amount of pollution is large.

During a visit to the site, the members of „Vazrazhdane“ – Burgas found the presence of hundreds of tons of waste, some of them baled. They are scattered for kilometers along the canal bed and along the Sredetska River, as well as on the territory of tens of acres of land, part of which belongs to former military units. During the summer days, the smell of decaying waste is unbearable for the people living in the area, and the riverbed has not been cleaned for another year.

An inspection by Tsoncho Ganev based on official annual reports of the RIEW found that for the past five years the mayor of Sredets Ivan Zhabov has drawn up acts of the RIEW worth tens of thousands of levs, but environmental problems in the city not only remain but deepen to critical proportions. As a result of the findings, we can assume that the pollution is due to inaction by local authorities.

Over the years, multiple signals have been submitted to the local RIEW, the Basin Directorate and the regional administration in Burgas. The topic has been repeatedly covered by local and national media, but there is no action to stop the pollution. To date, the problem has reached the scale of an ecological catastrophe that threatens the lives and health of both the local population and all who visit this area.

In addition to decomposing near arable land, some of the waste is often incinerated, and much of the pollution enters the Sredetska riverbed, which flows into Lake Mandre and from there into the Black Sea.

In view of the above information, Tsoncho Ganev asks the following question to the Minister of Environment and Water, insisting on a specific answer in writing and as soon as possible:

What actions will you take to break the vicious circle of transfer of responsibility between the competent institutions and local authorities, how and in what timeframe will the problem be resolved?
