The Prosecutor’s Office complained to the European Commission about political pressure. This happened during a video conference call between Prosecutor General Geshev and his deputies Daniela Masheva, Plamena Tsvetanova, Krassimira Filipova and Desislava Pironeva with representatives of Brussels. They are responsible for the horizontal rule of law mechanism in connection with the forthcoming annual report on the Member States of the European Union.

The leadership of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Bulgaria has expressed concerns about continued systemic political pressure on the institution, which jeopardizes the rule of law and the effective functioning of the independent judiciary.

During the meeting, the consequences of the planned closure of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office and the Specialized Criminal Court, discussed on the basis of recommendations in numerous reports of the European Commission, were discussed.

One of the risks for the activity of the Prosecutor’s Office was the reduction of the budget of the judiciary for 2022, adopted by the National Assembly at the end of February, which in practice violates its constitutionally guaranteed financial independence and the principle of separation of powers. from the state prosecution.

Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev stressed the readiness of the Prosecutor’s Office to actively participate in the comprehensive reform of the judiciary, which will respond to the recommendations made to Bulgaria by the Venice Commission, the Council of Europe and others, in a dialogue between the authorities to ensuring the stability and efficiency of the justice system in the country, the state prosecution said.
