Blagoevgrad Mayor Ilko Stoyanov announced that there is a real danger that the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Oncology in the city will go bankrupt. During a press conference, he pointed out the reason – a huge leak of funds over the years.

„Several months ago, the manager of the Oncology Hospital was replaced and an audit was launched to check the overall condition of the municipal company. (…) At the end of last week, and now at the Medical Council, we met with striking violations – brazen, cynical and unforgiving. (…) If we hadn’t made a change, the hospital would have gone into liquidation and maybe everything would have been swept away.“

More than BGN 200,000 have been misappropriated by the hospital in the past two years alone, the mayor said, adding that the inspection is still ongoing. According to him, they were diverted by posting funds for drugs used to treat cancer patients. According to him, instead of paying for the necessary medicines, the money was transferred to the account of the mutual fund and was withdrawn in cash by an employee of the medical institution.

„Instead of paying for the medicines, he transfers them to the account of VSK – a completely different account from the one of the creditor with the medicines. At the moment, the balance on the account is BGN 13“, Stoyanov explained.

The Blagoevgrad District Prosecutor’s Office will be contacted in the case. The supply of medicines will not be stopped.
