Evil has been done. The big criminal in this case is the Prosecutor’s Office.

This was stated in an interview with Iskra.bg by former mayor of Vidin Gergo Gergov, who condemned the state prosecution. The decision of the Montana District Court is subject to appeal before the Court of Appeal in Sofia within two weeks.

I believe that what the court presented as information is comprehensive at the moment. The case has been widely popular in Bulgaria since 2014, you know how strong media interest there was then and what the actions were. The important thing is that the truth prevailed and the court gave answers to many questions that remain in the public to this day, namely – whether there was a crime by the mayor and whether the actions of the Prosecutor’s Office were correct. The answer is categorically that the big criminal in this case is called the Prosecutor’s Office.“, Gergov stressed.

He added that the decision on whether to appeal the rejected claim for BGN 200,000 would be made by his lawyers.

The cases ended in 2016, after the mayoral election. The fact is that my name entered all the morning blocks, the lunch news, the evening news, all the national media and until the next election the Prosecutor’s Office did not find the strength to say – we unprincipledly destroyed a man who was not guilty. If that had happened, I could tell you today that there is a chance that trust in a person will return. But the fact is that this thing is not happening and I am convinced that it will not happen.„, said the former mayor of Vidin.

According to him, the only good thing about the situation is that Vidin has become a harbinger of the increasingly discussed topic of judicial reform.

Society is mature to say ‘stop’ to all these injustices. The fact that there is now talk about changes in the administration of justice and especially about the Prosecutor’s Office and its actions is indicative that the public is wising up and seeing where the weaknesses were and with what measure the Prosecutor’s Office was used to serve some political and economic interests. In this case my personality is not important, what is important is that the people in Bulgaria live in a more law-abiding country where they have confidence in every institution. I remain a public servant to my city and will give everything I have given and continue to give to the community – my knowledge, skills and experience. A year ago, I received a significant award for me, the White Bird Award for Community Service of the The Bulgarian News Agency. I have not stopped being involved in politics, but for me it means activity for the benefit of society, not positions, titles, etc.“, Gergov said in conclusion.
