Our country is close to new parliamentary elections in the summer season. This is what Professor of constitutional law, Prof. Ekaterina Mihaylova, predicted on the air of „BNT“. She specified that her thesis was based on the background of what she saw as reactions in the past week – only 2 political forces were talking and that is in such a way that it was clear that they could not communicate with each other. The others were silent.

„Tomorrow, maybe the situation will clear up a bit with the first day of Parliament, but the risk of another election is on the horizon and you know – the bad thing is that we seem to be getting used to it.“

The new parliament has to reach an agreement on several main priorities, some of which are related to our Euro-Atlantic membership – it must become clear whether we still want to be there or we want something else, the expert pointed out. According to her, given the results of the past elections, the majority wants us to be there. In her words, the big goal is to preserve peace, as well as to remain a democratic and financially stable country.

„If I have to give advice to politicians, that advice is – sit down and prioritize – what you think is important for the country.“

The budget for 2023 is at stake, and the negotiations for a regular cabinet must first go through those for policies, Prof. Mihailova pointed out. According to her, the election of a new chairman of the 49th National Assembly „is not such a difficult task“ and according to the Constitution he must be elected at the first meeting.

The procedures for handing over the mandates will not be delayed and consultations with the President are likely to start within the next week, she believes.

The political crisis puts democracy in Bulgaria at risk, the professor warned, explaining: „It is dangerous for political forces to leave power in the hands of the president, because it destroys the tools of democracy. And when the institutions stop working, there are always heroes who jump on the horse and lead with flags and slogans in an unknown direction.“
