Prime Minister Kiril Petkov was summoned to Parliament by lawmakers because of Russia‘s harsh stance earlier today, which called on NATO to withdraw its forces from Bulgaria and Romania. He was adamant before the MPs that Bulgaria was a sovereign state that had made its choice long ago. Thus, our country has become a member of the Alliance, so defense decisions are made in coordination with our partners.

The Prime Minister also stressed that the Washington Treaty did not provide for member states to be in the second category. That is, there are no countries for which collective defense is not fully implemented, “24 Chasa“ reported.

The Prime Minister called on Moscow to engage in a constructive dialogue that would lead to de-escalation of tensions. Thus, according to him, Russia should work for a more secure Europe and one based on the rule of law.

The MPs also reacted to Kiril Petkov’s statement from the parliamentary rostrum. Co-chairman of „Democratic Bulgaria“ Hristo Ivanov announced that they were satisfied with the quick and timely reaction of the Prime Minister and his firm position on Bulgaria’s membership in NATO. Ivanov pointed out that this was a „strong position“ and he was satisfied with this fact. He added that “Democratic Bulgaria” would support the government’s efforts to develop the Alliance.

“Vazrazhdane” political party declared that only the Bulgarian people and state could decide which troops to have on our territory. MP Tsoncho Ganev was adamant that neither Washington nor Moscow could interfere in our foreign and domestic policy. He stressed that our country did not need confrontation.
