The incoming waters of the Iskar River dragged a whole „island“ of branches and waste woven into them to the HPP along the river, commented Greenpeace Bulgaria. Then they noted that something similar happened in Burgas. According to the organization, this is, to put it mildly, an ecological disaster that raises very important questions for the whole state of the country. Namely:
- Who will take responsibility for the pollution?
- Why did this pollution occur?
- Why don’t the institutions do their job?
- Why is waste management across the country a complete failure?
- Why do we need millions for incinerators and not for separate collection?
- Why is the biodiversity in our rivers dying and at the same time hydropower plants are still being built?
- Why are there plastic bottles in ravines and riverbeds across the country, and do we have to wait for the rain and floods to „clean them up“?
- Who stops imposing a deposit on plastic bottles? (The deposit in this case is a refund in exchange for the returned empty bottle in a store, similar to the system for glass beer bottles.)
- When will we see actually recycled building materials and their reuse, instead of the current view of thermal insulation floating in the river?
„Greenpeace Bulgaria“ insists that the Ministry of Environment and Water take care to keep nature clean and take responsibility for specific cases. The towed waste from the water has probably accumulated along the valley for a very long time. The organization reminds that in 2020 they submitted to the Ministry of Ecology a petition with proposals for further reduction of plastic pollution, signed by over 19,000 people. So far, they have not received a specific answer. And they ask:
